There’s something uniquely special about an in-home session. Unlike posed outdoor shoots, these sessions allow us to capture the real, raw essence of your family. The laughter, the love, and even the chaos. It’s about finding magic in the everyday moments that make your house a home, imperfections and all.
If you’re wondering how to prepare, don’t worry. This isn’t about creating a perfect setting. Instead, it’s about embracing the reality of your space and capturing the connection you share as a family.
Here’s the truth, real life isn’t perfect, and that’s where the beauty lies. Your home doesn’t need to look pristine. If toys are scattered across the living room or your kitchen table is covered in art supplies, let them be. Those details tell your story.
Before your in-home session, simply give the rooms you’d like photographed a quick tidy, but don’t feel pressured to make everything spotless. A lived-in home reflects your real life and that’s exactly what we’re here to capture.
When it comes to outfits, comfort is key. So, pick clothing that reflects your family’s style and feels true to who you are. While soft, neutral tones often work well, what matters most is that you feel comfortable. Rather than matching outfits, focus on colors that complement each other.
Cozy textures, layers, and even barefoot moments can bring warmth to the photos, helping them feel intimate and real.
Lighting is everything and I’m never afraid to get creative with it. Natural light is ideal, so in the days before your session, take note of which rooms get the best light during the morning or late afternoon. These will likely be the spaces where we’ll spend the most time.
However, if moody lighting is your vibe, we’ll embrace it. Whether it’s sunlight pouring through the windows or the soft glow of a lamp in the evening, we’ll work with the light that best fits the mood and feel of your home. Don’t be afraid to lean into the shadows and let the light add depth to your story.
You don’t need your entire home to be photo-ready. Instead, think about the places where your family spends the most time. Maybe it’s the living room where you all relax together, the kitchen where meals are shared, or the bedroom where quiet moments unfold. These spaces will help tell your family’s story, and we’ll focus on capturing those moments.
Feel free to include meaningful items too. A favorite blanket, a cherished piece of furniture, or your child’s beloved toy. These details bring a personal touch to your story.
An in-home session is all about capturing your family as you truly are. Forget about posing or trying to make everything look perfect. Instead, focus on being present. Play with your kids, snuggle on the couch, and laugh together. The more relaxed and connected you are, the more your love will shine through.
If your kids want to jump on the bed or have a tickle fight, let them! Often those spontaneous moments are the ones you’ll treasure the most.
It’s often the little moments that hold the most meaning. For instance, the way your toddler reaches for your hand, the quiet moments of snuggling, or the glance your partner gives when you’re not looking. These are the moments we’ll focus on.
In-home sessions capture the real life beauty of your family’s day to day. Life is messy, unpredictable, and full of surprises, but that’s what makes it special.
Before the session, give your family a heads-up. Let them know it’s going to be fun and relaxed. If your kids need a break or a snack, that’s totally fine. We’ll go with the flow and let the session unfold naturally.
For the best experience, try to schedule the session at a time when everyone is well-rested and fed. When everyone feels comfortable, it makes for the best moments.
Finally, remember that your in-home session isn’t just about taking pictures. It’s an opportunity to slow down and connect as a family. Whether you’re baking cookies, reading a favorite book, or just having a tickle fight in the living room, let the moments unfold naturally.
Let go of any pressure to perform or create a perfect image. Just be present with the people you love, and we’ll capture the magic in those everyday moments.
At the heart of this session is your family. Your love, your connection, and your story. These photos will reflect the moments that make your house feel like home. I’m honored to help capture that for you.
So, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy being present with the people you love most. Your story is unfolding every day, and these images will remind you of the beauty found in even the simplest of moments.
