There is something powerful about watching a mother transform her passion into something that supports and nurtures other mothers. Shelby Novak, founder of The Barre Crawl, has created a space that embodies this. What began as a personal journey has blossomed into quite the community. One that encourages connection, healing, and empowerment through movement and support. Little humans included in all the fun.
Shelby’s path into motherhood took an unexpected turn. Like many moms, she envisioned a birth plan that felt right, a plan she held close to her heart. But life had other ideas. “You know how some girls dream about the perfect wedding? Well, I always dreamed of having the perfect birth,” Shelby says. Her hopes were altered when a surprise cesarean became necessary. The experience left her feeling stripped of control. “I felt powerless… like all of my choices were taken the second I was admitted to the L&D unit.”
In this moment of vulnerability, Shelby realized how essential support and community are; particularly for mothers, like military spouses, who may not have their families close by. This realization led to the creation of The Barre Crawl, a space designed not just for fitness, but for mothers to heal, connect, and rediscover their strength.
What started with Shelby working out at home beside her son has since grown into a thriving mommy-and-me Pilates studio. But for Shelby, The Barre Crawl represents more than exercise. It’s a place where moms can come together, not only to move but to feel supported through the unpredictable landscape of motherhood.
“This experience has pushed me to want to work with mothers and encourage community among military spouses, specifically those who are far away from their families,” Shelby says. The Barre Crawl fosters connection through shared movement, offering a space where mothers can heal together, not just physically but emotionally. It’s a place where stories are exchanged, laughter is shared, and struggles are honored.
Shelby’s willingness to be open about her own journey is one of her greatest strengths. She speaks honestly about the challenges she faced in her early years of marriage and motherhood. “I was so afraid that first year of marriage and motherhood. I felt like I couldn’t take a deep breath because I was always waiting for something to go wrong.” Her honesty resonates with so many mothers who silently bear the weight of trying to balance parenthood, relationships, and personal identity.
At The Barre Crawl, Shelby fosters an environment where vulnerability is embraced. Moms are free to show up as they are. Without the pressure to appear as though they have everything together. This vulnerability creates deep, meaningful connections, allowing mothers to find comfort in the shared realities of their journeys.
Shelby is also transparent about her evolving relationship with her body, something that countless moms relate to. “It’s so easy to nitpick and tear myself apart because I don’t look the way I used to,” she admits. But despite these moments of doubt, she remains committed to capturing her postpartum journey through photography. “I make it a point not to shy away from pictures, even if I don’t feel comfortable, because I know I’ll want to see myself in the early days of motherhood.”
This choice serves as a reminder for all mothers: to honor where they are in the present, to embrace the changes their bodies have undergone, and to recognize that these moments, no matter how imperfect they feel now, will become cherished memories later.
At the heart of Shelby’s mission is a deep desire to uplift other mothers. Her dedication extends beyond her studio doors. “I exclusively look for other SAHMs that I can pay or help showcase their talents and hobbies,” she shares. Whether it’s through offering employment opportunities or highlighting the creative work of stay-at-home moms, Shelby ensures that her platform is a space where women can showcase their skills, passions, and creativity.
Shelby’s journey is proof to the power of community and vulnerability. The Barre Crawl has grown into a beautiful space where mothers can reconnect with their bodies, find strength in one another, and share the complexities of motherhood without judgment. It’s a place where fitness meets healing, where stories are celebrated, and where motherhood is honored in all its forms.
Through her work, Shelby continues to inspire, lifting up mothers and creating opportunities for them to thrive. Her story reminds us that even in moments of uncertainty, we are never alone. Through community, we find the strength to keep pushing forward. Shelby has also started offering lactation services as a lactation consultant to even better serve the community she has grown and cultivated here in Whidbey.
